Tommy Byrne had a 13-year major league career. He made an All-Star Game in 1950, which he probably should not have, to be honest. Yet, his early career is notable for a wildness that caused him to lead the league in walks and batters hit multiple times. That wildness was never more evident than it was on June 8, 1949.
The Yankees got a run in the top of the first, thanks to some wildness on the part of Tigers’ starter Virgil Trucks. He walked two and allowed a single before a run scored on a Yogi Berra groundout.
