Joe Girardi was tossed in the second inning of Sunday’s 11-2 victory over the Mets after arguing with third-base umpire John Hirschbeck, but the Yankees manager didn’t know it.
Hirschbeck had just called Greg Bird out for failing to check his swing on a third strike in the top of the second on what replays showed was a questionable call. Hirschbeck yelled at someone in the Yankees’ dugout before Girardi rushed out to approach the veteran umpire after Hirschbeck appeared to tell Girardi to “shut up.”
“Our guys, myself included, clearly saw Greg Bird didn’t swing and we didn’t like the call and I think you can read his lips what he said to me and I took offense to that,” Girardi said.
