CHICAGO—New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi rarely tells it like it is. He likes to bob and weave during interviews, either choosing just to state the obvious or obfuscate enough to shade the full truth.

In discussing the disintegration of Nathan Eovaldi from up-and-coming starter to the relatively unimportant role as a middle reliever, Girardi tried to make it a need-based decision, claiming that Eovaldi’s potential new job as a bridge to the three-headed relief monster of Dellin Betances, Andrew Miller and Aroldis Chapman is an underrated one, as if anyone in the history of baseball has used any of their top pitchers in middle relief.
