Teixeira’s uncle’s church in Baltimore being protected by National Guard

The rioting and protests that have rocked Baltimore had a special impact for Mark Teixeira. The Yankees first baseman grew up in a Baltimore suburb, went to high school in that city and has an uncle, a Catholic priest, whose church is being protected by the National Guard.

“Terrible. There’s nothing else to say,” Teixeira said Tuesday regarding the civil unrest that has devastated the city. “My uncle is there [in downtown] and his church is being guarded by the National Guard. So making sure he’s OK is the biggest thing.”

Teixeira had not spoken directly to his uncle, but said he was “doing fine.
