ANAHEIM, Calif. — Yankees manager Joe Girardi doesn’t want his young players thinking about next year — not while there’s still over a month left of this season and the Yankees are at least on the outskirts of the playoff race.
And they did look pretty good against the Angels, hitting four homers off right-hander Jered Weaver and getting 7 ²/u2083 shutout innings from Masahiro Tanaka in a 7-0 victory at Angel Stadium.
Still, it’s hard not to think of 2017 when you see Tanaka pitching to Gary Sanchez and Tyler Austin at first base because — as Girardi said before the game — he was “just playing Tyler Austin.
