ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Watching Sonny Gray work in the first two innings Saturday, there were no signs of what was to follow.
A run in the first was followed by two more in the second when the right-hander gave up consecutive doubles to start the frame, three hits in all and a walk.
Yet when he retired Jake Bauers to strand two in the second, Gray went from Tommy Kahnle to Greg Maddux.
“Fastball command, attacking hitters and forcing contact,’’ Gray said of what turned it around for him, but wasn’t good enough to avoid having a 4-0 loss hung on him thanks in a large part because the Yankees failed to support him.
