September 7, 1996: Yankees lose to Blue Jays 3-2

After nearly throwing a no-hitter in his first game back from surgery, David Cone took the mound tonight looking to give the Yankees their third straight win. He turned in a quality start, but the offense couldn’t give him any support. Toronto came away with the victory, 3-2.

Cone went seven strong innings and allowed three runs – all in the first inning – while striking out eight on the night. He gave up three of Toronto’s five hits in the game in the first, which saw Shawn Green connect for an RBI double and Joe Carter hit a two-run homer.
