September 3, 1996: Yankees fall to Oakland 10-9

Down 9-5 to the A’s heading into the seventh inning this afternoon, the Yankees staged a comeback. After Paul O’Neill drove in Derek Jeter with a sac fly, Tino Martinez smacked three-run home run to tie the game at nine. Unfortunately for the Yankees, Brian Boehringer allowed a run in the bottom half, allowing Oakland to go up 10-9 and ultimately win the game by the same score.

Dwight Gooden started for New York against Don Wengert. Gooden went 4.2 innings and gave up six runs (5 earned) on eight hits.
