CC Sabathia is done trying to be the pitcher he was a few years ago.
Instead, he’s working on being the pitcher Andy Pettitte was a few years ago.
“It’s just the mentality of not trying to throw a shutout every time,” Sabathia said Monday, a day before he was set to make his 15th start of the season. “It’s a different mind-set of being 34 years old and knowing my role on the team.”
It’s a role that is still being determined, as Sabathia has been unable to make the transition from dominant power pitcher to crafty southpaw, as Pettitte was later in his career.
