BALTIMORE — Until Austin Romine’s left thumb was injured catching Aroldis Chapman during warm-ups Saturday night, Joe Girardi was going to hold Brian McCann out until Monday to make sure his hyperextended left elbow was completely healed.
However, Romine had to leave the game Saturday and McCann replaced him. Sunday, with Romine’s thumb black and blue, Girardi started McCann against the Orioles.
“I was leaning toward that, giving [McCann] one more day,’’ Girardi said about Romine starting Sunday. “I think Mac is in a better position than Romine.’’
McCann didn’t appear to have an issue with the elbow, but he went 0-for-3 and is in a 1-for-19 slide.
