NEW YORK — The Yankees caught a huge break in the bottom of the ninth inning when David Ortiz was up to bat with the bases loaded and a 3-1 count.
Yanks' pitcher Andrew Miller threw what was clearly a ball but home plate umpire Ron Kulpa called it a strike. Ortiz was visibly upset and gestured enough to bring Sox manager John Farrell out, which ended in Farrell being tossed.
Ortiz then struck out on a called strike three. When he went to the dugout he was still barking and was tossed.
