ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Dellin Betances earned a reputation last season as a fire extinguisher, one Joe Girardi used whenever the Yankees needed to escape a hot situation.
Tuesday night, Betances was more like lighter fluid.
The dominant reliever entered a tie game in the eighth inning with runners on the corners, but he was unable to put out the fire. Evan Longoria's sacrifice fly broke the tie, then a pair of wild pitches by Betances gave the Rays an important insurance run en route to a 4-2 win over the Yankees.
