An AL executive was recalling the barren starting pitching market following the 2007 campaign.
It was so bad that the Mariners desperately gave the mundane Carlos Silva a four-year, $48 million contract and not a single other starter got a multi-year deal. The executive said every day he looked at the board and “hoped magically” something would jump out, which never did happen.
The executive was remembering that time because he anticipates this offseason is going to rival it; that if you need a starter you might have a better chance finding one on a checkout line in a supermarket than in free agency.
