Prized Yankees pitching prospect recalls surgery scare

TAMPA, Fla. -- It started with a sharp pain in Yankees pitching prospect Albert Abreu's stomach.

Hours later, it ended with him waking up in a hospital bed, groggy, down an appendix.

Abreu, 22, had an emergency appendectomy Feb. 7. The Yankees' sixth best prospect and No. 77 in the game, according to Baseball America, won't start working out again until next week and might not be ready for Opening Day.

"It's different because you think it's something you ate that's giving you the pain," Abreu said at George M.
