‘Players want to play’: Chase Headley returns from calf injury

BOSTON — Chase Headley understood the value of sitting out the two games before the All-Star break, but also put a lot of stock in that he gets paid to play.

“Players want to play,’’ the switch-hitting third baseman said before going 1-for-4 in the Yankees’ 5-3 loss to the Red Sox on Saturday night at Fenway Park. “I want to do my job.’’

Headley had missed the previous three games because of a sore right upper calf. Because of the impending break, the Yankees talked about Headley not playing Saturday and Sunday, but now its not as serious as when the injury occurred Wednesday.
