Petition to honor Yogi Berra heading to White House

The online petition to the White House to have Yankees great Yogi Berra considered for the Presidential Medal of Freedom reached the needed 100,000 votes mere hours before the midnight deadline on Monday night.

The petition now merits a response from the White House.

The campaign points to Berra’s military service and civil rights activism as reasons he should receive the honor, which nine other baseball players have received.

“A man of unimpeachable integrity and respect, he befriended the first black and Latino baseball players in Major League Baseball,” the petition states. “He is currently an ambassador for Athlete Ally, which promotes LGBT rights in sports.
