BRONX, N.Y. — Looking back on this 20th anniversary of the 2000 World Series champion New York Yankees, that team sure added a lot of different pieces to get across the finish line. The player additions were a lot more than 1998 and 1999 squads. These guys were all made their contributions but their time was mostly short-lived in the Bronx. David Justice, Glenallen Hill, Jose Vizcaino, Denny Neagle, Luis Polonia, and of course, Jose Canseco.
On Aug. 7, 2000, the Yankees claimed the 35-year-old slugger off waivers from the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. The move caught many, including Yankee manager Joe Torre, off guard.
