Chase Headley, despite never having batted higher than fifth this season, was elevated to second by manager Joe Girardi against White Sox right-hander Dylan Covey on Wednesday night at a frigid Yankee Stadium.
The switch-hitting third baseman rewarded the manager’s move with a two-run homer in the first inning that set the foundation for a 9-1 Yankees victory.
“Joe called me and asked me about it today and I don’t really care where I hit,’’ said Headley, who went 1-for-4, and is batting .396 (19-for-48) with a .500 on-base percentage.
“He’s been an on-base machine when you look at what he’s done, he’s been on base half the time,’’ Girardi said of the move.
