WASHINGTON — Hall of Fame catcher Yogi Berra, the only man ever to manage both the Yankees and Mets to the World Series, received the nation's highest civilian honor at the White House Tuesday.
With eldest son Larry Berra standing in for his late father, President Obama recognized the three-time American League most valuable player and 10-time World Series champion with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Berra served in the Navy during World War II and was part of the D-Day invasion.
"This is the exclamation point at the end of his life," said Berra's granddaughter, Lindsay Berra of Montclair.
