The league and the union were reacting to uncertainty over when games will be played again and many players’ desire to return home to their families as the sport tries to determine how to respond to the coronavirus pandemic.
The situation was fluid as of Friday evening regarding whether MLB and the Players Association would put out a joint statement on the matter, or whether the league would put it out alone. Each team was deciding what elements of their spring sites would remain open and players were deciding whether to remain, individually or in groups.
