Nearly perfect: Yankees hire Armando Galarraga as minor league instructor, per report

Newsday's Erik Boland reported from Tampa on Thursday that the Yankees have hired former big league pitcher Armando Galarraga as a minor league pitching instructor.

As Boland noted, Galarraga is perhaps best remembered for his perfect game that wasn't on June 2, 2010.

Galarraga, pitching for the Detroit Tigers that night, had recorded the first 26 outs out the game and needed just one more for perfection, when Cleveland Indians' infielder Jason Donald hit a ground ball to first baseman Miguel Cabrera on a 1-1 count.
