With their first selection in the 2021 MLB Draft, the Yankees took Eastern Illinois shortstop Trey Sweeney. New York seemed to be linked mostly to pitching in the leadup to the first round, but a number of interesting arms, such as Will Bednar and Gunnar Hoglund, were selected just ahead of them. Instead, the Yankees took a bat with their top pick for the fourth consecutive year.
Sweeney is a 6-foot-3, 200 pound lefty swinger with a fair bit of upside. He’s risen up boards this year, running a 1.234 OPS with 14 homers in 48 games this collegiate season.
