The Yankees don’t usually get a compensation pick, but this year they received a Competitive Balance Round A pick from the Reds as part of the Sonny Gray trade. With the 38th overall pick, they pivoted from high school infielder to college pitcher and selected TJ Sikkema.
Sikkema is a big left-hander out of Missouri. He has worked as both a starter and closer during his college years, so he can do it all. He’ll probably get a chance to be a starting pitcher, but scouts think he’ll stick in the majors as a lefty reliever at the very least.
