Someone just dropped $2.8 million on a mint condition Micky Mantle baseball card — the heftiest price ever paid at auction for a post-war player and more than twice what he made in his entire career.
The card was sold Thursday by former Philadelphia Eagles offensive lineman Evan Mathis through Heritage Auctions in a bid to score money for a new house, according to officials.
It landed in the hands of an anonymous owner after several rounds of “vigorous bidding,” officials said.
First issued in 1952 by Topps, the card is one of just six that have been rated a “Mint 9″ by Professional Sports Authenticator.
