Mets-Royals picked as Opening Day showcase game

DALLAS — The Mets will begin their 2016 season similar to how they concluded their 2015 — against the Royals, probably as the only game going.

Commissioner Rob Manfred announced Thursday, at the Major League Baseball quarterly owners meetings, that next season will open with a trio of games on Sunday, April 3, concluding with a World Series rematch at Kauffman Stadium with a scheduled first-pitch time of 8:30 p.m. Eastern.

The Mets-Royals opener had been announced in September, along with the rest of the schedule. It’s not surprising ESPN chose this game to kick off its “Sunday Night Baseball” series.
