"It was pretty sore yesterday, and it's better today," said Girardi, adding that McCann was available off the bench Friday if needed.
"You never want to lose your starting catcher, but it helps that [Austin] Romine has done a really good job with the staff and swinging the bat."
McCann is 1-for-23 since May 25 and is hitting .224/.321/.401 with seven homers and 21 RBIs this season. Romine, 27, entered play Friday batting .293/.317/.431 with a homer and seven RBIs.
Girardi does not believe that a stint on the disabled list or a Triple-A callup is necessary.
