Luis Severino’s season, head threatened in ‘scary’ moment

BRADENTON, Fla. — An uneventful day at McKechnie Field nearly took a disastrous turn for the Yankees, as Luis Severino barely got his glove up in time to snare the line drive Pittsburgh left fielder Starling Marte hit in the fifth inning.

“It was scary,’’ said Severino, who pitched four more shutout innings in a 7-2 win on Thursday. “I saw it all the way and it was coming to my face, I [stuck] up my glove.’’

Other than the near-death experience, it was another strong performance for the right-hander, who continues to impress this spring.

Severino gave up just two hits and fanned five after he entered to start the bottom of the fourth.
