NEW YORK -- On July 4, 1995, a slender 25-year-old rookie right-hander threw eight innings of two-hit, 11 strikeout ball for the New York Yankees against a Chicago White Sox lineup that included future Hall of Famer Frank Thomas, a DH named John Kruk who would go on to be a career .300 hitter, Robin Ventura, the current manager of the White Sox, and Ozzie Guillen, who 10 years later would manage the team to a World Series win.
That Yankee pitcher's name was Mariano Rivera and in one fell swoop, that performance lowered his ERA from 10.
