BOSTON — Luis Severino’s gem was slipping into the misty fog that blanketed Fenway Park and Aaron Judge’s splendid birthday celebration was riding shotgun.
Dellin Betances provided a perfect eighth inning and manager Joe Girardi called on closer Aroldis Chapman with a three-run lead in the ninth Wednesday against a Red Sox lineup without Dustin Pedroia and Pablo Sandoval.
With runners on first and third, the lead cut to a pair of runs and ahead in the count to the right-handed hitting Josh Rutledge, catcher Austin Romine and Chapman agreed on a slider that Rutledge hit high and far toward the left-field foul pole.
