Luis Cessa delivers his finest performance in Yankees split

BALTIMORE — After CC Sabathia allowed an early three-run lead in the first game of two Monday against the awful Orioles to drift into the Inner Harbor, the Yankees handed the ball to Luis Cessa and asked him to help them avoid getting swept by perhaps the worst baseball team of all time.

Considering Cessa’s pedestrian body of big league work since joining the Yankees, it was a lot to ask even against the Orioles.

Yet in his second start of this season, the right-hander, with assistance from Brett Gardner and Didi Gregorius in the field and at the plate, helped the Yankees avoid the embarrassment of losing twice to the putrid Birds in the same day by taking the nightcap 10-2, in front of 26,340 at Camden Yards.
