TORONTO — Jordan Montgomery sat at his locker at Yankee Stadium last week, his forehead beaded with sweat after working out in the suddenly warm weather. His disposition was just as sunny.
It had been five days since Montgomery, the left-handed pitcher who was coming off three weeks of prescribed rest for a strained flexor tendon in his left arm, had begun throwing again. He had thrown three days in a row from 60 feet, taken a day off and progressed to 90 feet.
“I feel good,” he said. “Everything’s on schedule.”
On Tuesday, less than a week later, the Yankees announced that Montgomery — who the Yankees had hoped would return to their rotation around the All-Star break — would be headed for Tommy John surgery, which will be performed on Thursday.
