John Wetteland’s troubled post-MLB career: ‘Suicide’ scare, Nationals firing

John Wetteland’s arrest on charges of child sex abuse is the worst turn for the former star Yankees and Rangers closer, who has faced troubles since retiring after the 2000 season.

He entered the coaching ranks in 2006 — a year after entering the Texas Rangers’ Hall of Fame. But Wetteland failed to make it through one season as the Nationals’ bullpen coach, fired in June 2006 by manager Frank Robinson. The Washington Post reported Wetteland liked to see his relievers have fun and encouraged pranks, like setting off firecrackers in spring training. He also was reportedly involved in helping to try to disassemble a video camera.
