Ignoring Yankees’ reality to find how they can claw back in race

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Yankees left Boston in need of some divine intervention to get back into this race.

Mark Teixeira’s last words following the latest Yankees defeat at Fenway Park were: “I’ll pray if you do.”

Perhaps that’s how the Yankees spent their last scheduled off day of the season Monday before facing the Rays for three games at Tropicana Field, starting Tuesday.

But this stretch run is starting to look considerably less dramatic after the Yankees followed up their seven-game winning streak by dropping seven of their next eight to fall eight games behind the Red Sox in the AL East and four games behind Toronto for the second wild card.
