In a bullpen in Richmond, Va., Michael Fulmer’s career unexpectedly took a hard right. In between pitches of a normal throwing session, the young pitcher was summoned to see Binghamton Mets manager Pedro Lopez.
After parts of five seasons in the Mets organization, Fulmer had been dealt to Detroit less than 15 minutes before the July 31 trade deadline as the prospect who made the acquisition of Yoenis Cespedes possible.
“It kind of was out of nowhere,” Fulmer said. “I didn’t have any idea. I walk inside and all my teammates start clapping, saying there’s the new Tiger.
