A minor era of Yankees history comes to a close Thursday night as the toughest opponent they have ever encountered calls it a career. There have been numerous better players to face the Yankees over the years, but none did as much damage on a bigger stage than David Ortiz.
Understandably, fans are not exactly heartbroken over his decision to retire. An 0-for-5 finale similar to his performance on Tuesday (complete with game-ending strikeout and all) would be an ideal way to bid him adieu. Since the Red Sox have historically been the Yankees’ biggest rival, it’s worth revisiting how some of their most famous players performed in their farewells.
