Heat’s on Neil Walker as Yankees’ roster crunch nears

Baseball Reference and Fangraphs compute Wins Above Replacement (WAR) differently, yet came to this similar conclusion in their formulas that attempt to combine hitting, fielding and baserunning into one statistic:

Neil Walker was the worst player in the majors.

Going into his start at first base Thursday afternoon against the Astros, Walker was last in Fangraphs WAR among the 220 players who had at least 80 plate appearances, while he was tied for last with San Francisco’s Austin Jackson in Baseball Reference’s version.

The Yankees are facing a potential roster crunch with Brandon Drury (migraines) and Greg Bird (ankle surgery) almost ready to start an injury rehab.
