The newest member of Monument Park turns 61 years young today.
The Brooklyn native came to the Bronx in 1975 in a trade from the Pirates. Always a fan favorite, Willie was named co-captain with Ron Guidry from 1986-1988. He was a great defensive second baseman with a knack for turning a double play, despite never getting a Gold Glove Award.
In 1980 he led the league in walks (119) and was second in the AL in on-base percentage (.427), eighth in stolen bases (30) and ninth in runs (99) winning the Silver Slugger Award.
