LONDON — Standing in the middle of Finsbury Park at the start of a clinic for the London Meteorites Baseball Club on Thursday, Hal Steinbrenner reiterated his desire to upgrade the pitching staff of the rampaging Yankees.
Having spent beyond the first two luxury-tax thresholds with a third one of $246 million which carries a stiff penalty of 42.5 percent on every dollar over that amount, Steinbrenner is aware of the costs of acquiring a starting pitcher who could push the Yankees toward the Triple Crown of luxury tax.
Nevertheless, Steinbrenner is more concerned about what acquiring a pitcher would cost in young talent.
