TORONTO — No matter the moment in his nascent major league career, Greg Bird has reacted nonplused to whatever has been thrown at him — good or bad. It was a sign to many of his teammates that Bird, 22, has maturity uncommon in a player his age, a trait that is sure to serve him well.
But the stony facial expression vanished after Bird delivered his biggest hit of the season, a three-run, 10th-inning home run that lifted the Yankees to an exhilarating 6-4 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays Tuesday at Rogers Centre.
