BALTIMORE — Even before spring training began, the Yankees’ battle for first base was a significant theme, with Luke Voit considered to have a leg up over Greg Bird to win the spot.
It’s a week into the regular season, and both Voit and Bird are regulars in the lineup because of the onslaught of injuries that has hit the Yankees so far.
And in Saturday’s game against the Orioles, Bird followed Voit in the batting order, hitting cleanup for the second time this year.
The possibility of something like the current situation is what Bird tried to keep in mind as he was going through spring training, when questions about his potential role were a daily topic for debate.
