LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — Greg Bird came so close to leaving camp healthy, if not stellar. Instead, the first baseman left Champion Stadium very early Saturday to get his sore right foot examined.
The injury-prone Bird returned to Tampa to get examined by team medical officials, including Dr. Daniel Murphy, the Yankees announced. It wasn’t apparent how he suffered the injury, although he was in good spirits prior to the Yankees’ split-squad game against the Braves and took part in pre-game batting practice. He was introduced in the team’s starting lineup, only to be lifted in the top of the first inning for pinch-hitter Ryan McBroom.
