DETROIT — Joe Girardi can’t predict the reaction from Alex Rodriguez’s teammates whenever Rodriguez ties Willie Mays for fourth place on the all-time home run list at 660. Rodriguez is two back of Mays.
“I don’t know what’s going to happen there,” the Yankees manager said. “It’s hard to choreograph moments. We’ll see what happens and let the guys do what they do.’’
The Yankees contend they don’t have to pay Rodriguez the $6 million bonus for tying Mays that is in his contract, because his involvement in the Biogenesis scandal left them unable to market the achievement — which was the reason the clause was included in the deal.
