Girardi: If Betances hit runner to get call, it would be ‘assault’

Sports

Dellin Betances picks up the ball and then throws it over the heads of the base runner Carlos Correa and Mark Teixeira (not pictured), allowing the go-ahead run to score in the Yankees' 5-3 loss to the Astros on Tuesday at the Stadium.

It did not take long for Joe Girardi’s first disagreement with an umpire in 2016.

The Yankees manager was fuming in the eighth inning after home-plate umpire Dana DeMuth did not call interference on the Astros’ Carlos Correa for running inside the base line, causing Dellin Bettances to make an errant throw intended for Mark Teixeira.
