Didi Gregorius to have Tommy John surgery

Didi Gregorius will have Tommy John surgery on his right elbow, the Yankees announced on Friday.

Manager Aaron Boone said Gregorius injured his elbow in Game 1 of the American League Division Series against the Red Sox.

Gregorius, who hit .268 with 27 homers and 86 RBIs in the regular season, is the third high-profile position player this year to have the procedure, with two-way star Shohei Ohtani undergoing the operation after the season ended.

Position players typically return to the field in less time following Tommy John, such as Yankees rookie infielder Gleyber Torres, who missed about half a season in 2017 after tearing the UCL in his non-throwing elbow.
