In Yankees parlance, the “Core Four” is no more.
Make it the “Fab Five.”
With all due respects to Michigan, that was the phrase used by general manager Brian Cashman when he referred to the legacy of Bernie Williams in Yankee history. And Williams, who formally retired Friday, picked up on it later, saying he usually laughed when he was never included in the same group with Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Andy Pettitte and Jorge Posada.
“To set the record straight, Bernie is part of the Fab Five. He is a member of that fabulous five that got produced from our system that led to many of these championships that we have,” Cashman said before the Yankees’ 6-1 victory over the Mets at the Stadium.
