A home run as dramatic as the one Bobby Thomson hit 25 years ago this month touched off a victory demonstration last night reminiscent of Shea Stadium of 1969 and have the Yankees a sudden death 7-6 victory over the Royals and their first American League championship in 12 years.
Chambliss connected on the first pitch of the last of the ninth inning and drove it over the blue fence in rightfield and, as the ball disappeared, the Yankees had won their 30th AL pennant.
