Chase Whitley will undergo Tommy John surgery, the Yankees announced Monday.
The right-hander got the recommendation from Yankees physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad.
Whitley, 25, exited his start Thursday night in the second inning due to elbow discomfort. In four starts this season, he posted a 4.19 ERA with 16 strikeouts in 19 1/3 innings.
Chris Capuano returned from the disabled list Sunday to assume the No. 5 spot in the Yankees rotation. Masahiro Tanaka remains on the shelf due to an arm injury after being diagnosed last season with a partially torn elbow ligament.
