CC Sabathia’s fifth-inning tumble attempting to field a ground ball in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader against the Royals looked worse than it was.

“My brace got caught in the turf,’’ Sabathia said of the fall. “It was good for the highlight reel.
In 4 ²/u2083 innings Sabathia gave up two runs and six hits in his 274th start as a Yankee. That tied Bob Shawkey for eighth place on the all-time Yankees list for career starts.

With 100 innings pitched in 18 games prior to Saturday’s assignment, Sabathia is the first pitcher to work 100 innings in 17 different seasons since Tim Wakefield did it 18 seasons 1993, 1995-2011.
