Move over, Shakespeare, because the Yankees’ 2023 season is becoming more comedic than Theseus and Hippolyta’s wedding in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. By July, it was clear this team had no identity, no fight, and no urgency. They sank like a rock before the dog days, claiming sole possession of last place in the AL East by the All-Star break while the Orioles, Rays, Blue Jays, and even the overlooked Red Sox all played respectable baseball. Perhaps most insultingly, owner Hal Steinbrenner gaslighted the fanbase when 2023 started to go awry in earnest.
