The Yankees haven’t made too many big free-agent splashes in the past two years — bringing back Aroldis Chapman and signing Matt Holiday are the main two moves they’ve made this offseason — and like everyone else, general manager Brian Cashman is looking ahead to baseball’s vaunted 2018 free-agent class.
Though he is prohibited from commenting on the potential pursuit of players currently under contract to other teams, Cashman acknowledged Tuesday the Yankees’ current attempt to make the roster younger might allow them to go after targets such as Manny Machado and Bryce Harper in two years, after passing on the likes of Edwin Encarnacion or trading for Chris Sale this winter.
